"Without stories we are all just eating machines with shoes." -Roald Dahl
According to his official website, "Roald Dahl was born in Wales to Norwegian parents, and spent his early years in Llandaff. Roald's parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg, were both Norwegian and he was named after Norway's famous polar explorer, Roald Amundsen."
Dahl is considered a writer of dark or black humor and some have speculated that the darkness in his writing originated from his own life experiences. As a child, Dahl lost both his father and sister and was sent to live in a boarding school where he was bullied and beaten. He was also a fighter pilot in World War II and a member of the Royal Air Force.
In addition to, "Lamb to the Slaughter," Dahl wrote 50 adult stories; his best known collection of short stories is, "Tales of the Unexpected." He is considered one of the top 10 most-read children’s authors and is most noted for his children's stories that include The Gremlins, The BFG, Matilda, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and James and The Giant Peach.
I think that blogger Sherl Knobloch sums up Dah's life best: "Perhaps his tragedies in life enabled him to journey and find solace in an inner world of imagination. A world only known to the young and young at heart….a world of gremlins and giant peaches."
